Position

Computational Mechanics and Dynamics Researcher

  • Location: Aberdeen Proving Ground, Maryland

Position Summary

SURVICE Engineering is seeking a Computational Mechanics and Dynamics scientist/engineer to support our U.S. Army Research Laboratory (ARL) customer.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Perform computational structural dynamic analyses to determine the structural response of complex structures with viscoelastic and nonlinear material properties
  • Create and modify computer-aided design (CAD) drawings of components
  • Investigate the impact of cyclic loading on hysteresis and fatigue life in soft materials and biological systems through modeling and experimental design
  • Determine peak resonance frequencies of complex structures
  • Use high-performance computing (HPC) and finite-element modeling (FEM) tools to determine the effects of geometric and viscoelasticity (rate effects, hysteresis, etc.) on resonant frequencies of complex structures
  • Interpret research requirements to define appropriate technical solutions to meet programmatic goals
  • Diagnose and troubleshoot models and methods used in the course of conducting simulations
  • Assist with designing experiments to investigate the effects of hysteresis and fatigue
  • Support the design of experiments at ARL experimental facilities, other government agencies, contractor sites, and academic sites
  • Investigate Army, DoD, and other customer research and development problems
  • Prepare presentations and written documents summarizing efforts. May present the information to the ARL staff, universities, private corporations, research institutes, national laboratories, or other Government research organizations

Qualifications

Master's degree in Engineering or Physical Sciences and at least 3 years of experience, including 1 year of practical experience to include working in an academic laboratory, government laboratory, or industry laboratory.

or

Ph.D. in Engineering or Physical Sciences and 1 year of practical experience to include working in an academic laboratory, government laboratory, or industry laboratory.

  • Experience conducting computational mechanics simulations to solve structural dynamics problems
  • Experience conducting basic and applied research to predict the response of materials and structures under dynamic loads
  • Experience documenting numerical and analytical procedures, methods, results, and conclusions
  • Experience using ABAQUS or similar FEM and/or MPM software
  • Experience with parallel computing, Linux/Unix, MATLAB, and Python
